Summerdale council announces Town Cleanup Day on Sept. 18

SUMMERDALE - The Summerdale town council has announced the date for a Town Cleanup Day. The event will happen on Saturday, Sept. 18, National Cleanup Day 2021. The council is still deciding on an exact time, but anticipates the cleanup will happen during the morning hours and will conclude at approximately 11 a.m.

“We’re going to put a couple dumpsters out in a good location, we’re going to get some teams together to go around and pick up all the trash in the ditches, we’ll have a little competition, and afterwards we’ll have a hot dog cookout for the participants,” said Mayor David Wilson.

This is not the first time a cleanup day has happened in Summerdale. Wilson recalls a previous time when the town organized a cleanup effort. Approximately 20 people participated at that time, and Wilson hopes to get a fair amount of participation for the upcoming cleanup.

Other suggestions under consideration for the Sept. 18 event are incorporating Shred-It Day to coincide with the cleanup and to have a dump truck ride around town picking up items left on the side of the road, at no cost to the citizens.

The idea of hosting a cleanup day came after councilmember Mary Carolyn McDaniel discussed the potential of organizing such an event with Wilson. She noted it may be difficult for some citizens to transport large items to the dump, and providing dumpsters and a set day to cleanup debris throughout town could help people by making cleanup efforts easier.

More details will be released, including exact times and the meeting location for cleanup teams, closer to the event. Check www.summerdaleal.com for further information.
